...for What are You Reading Wednesdays?  If they do,  I can tell you that I'm listening to something that an article in the New York Times turned me on to. It's a podcast from 2015 or so called "Afroqueer Podcast"  I know almost nothing about the continent of Africa and so thought this might be an interesting way to celebrate pride month while also raising my own awareness about a part of the world that I'm astonishingly ignorant about.

I've listened to four episodes so far and it's difficult to say I'm enjoying it, since some of the content is difficult and painful, but I am definitely learning stuff.  And, of course, some of the stories are extremely heartwarming as well.

Otherwise, it looks like the "why can't I see Lyda's pictures?" mystery has been solved. I also forgot I have a premium membership to DW? So, I will now attempt to avail myself of the photo uploading option that is native to this system. I don't have anything in particular that needs showing off, but I will test with a picture of my cat:

Does everyone see it?

I am quickly depleting my lifetime allocation of the usage of the word "amazing."

Yesterday, [personal profile] rachelmanija offered to try to find us a tidal pool and, since we were on the road, continue up to Santa Barbara for brunch, bookstores, and botanical gardens. And, let me just say: AMAZING.

The drive up the coast was as lovely as all the travel guides promise. The landscape here remains a constant source of wonder for me. It is so very clear that we are from a different ecosystem, almost nothing looks the same as Minnesota. I took a lot of pictures a the botanical garden, but those didn't entirely capture the alienness of seeing ficus trees the size  and girth of oaks... or discovering pomegranates growing as a hedge.

And, I don't know about you, but I did not expect Los Angeles to smell faintly of eucalyptus.

The beach that Rachel found us was stunning. I mean, maybe it was run-of-the-mill if you're living with an ocean view every day, but Mason and I were nearly giddy. Mason finally put his toes in the water... and promptly never wanted to take them out, except to climb the rocks. We found cool shells and attempted to reconstruct a giant lobster corpse that had clearly been some animal's feast.

It was everything we wanted and more. I seriously will never be able to thank Rachel enough.

Then we drove past avocado orchards and berry farms to Santa Barbara, which was very picturesque. Everything on the main drag was in Mission style, that ochre tiled architecture you associate with the southwest.

We went to a brunch place called Scarlett Begonia, where they had food with descriptions like "avacodo-massaged kale." Rachel got a drink called "Tears Of A Thousand Unicorns."

Then bookstore shopping, ice cream at a creamery, and then up into the hills to the botanical garden.

I was not expecting to get to see California redwoods, but we did. The are also every bit majestic as advertised.

Redwoods

I took way too many pictures of the flora, but I mean it has been an obsession of mine since arriving here.

The drive back to the hotel was pleasant, mostly because of the company. Rachel can (no surprise,) spin an excellent tale. I do very much wish we lived closer, as I'd be over at hers gossiping and chatting all the time.

Today is our last day. Our flight leaves late, 6:40 pm, so we are doing dim sum with Rachel and maybe getting a chance to climb Culver hill, but after all the walking yesterday, maybe not. Will report tomorrow and thread in all the pictures!

Sorry I've been away... we were up north. I'm going to slowly chronicle our vacation over the next several blog posts, because otherwise this would be huge and would probably take me another whole week to write (and y'all would think I was dead.)

First, though, Tate has updated UnJust Cause : http://www.wattpad.com/55131739-unjust-cause-part-12-the-innocence-of-dragons. I doubt a lot of you are going from here to there, but I feel the need to, you know, social media this so if it fails, it isn't because I didn't get the word out.

Secondly, I may also be punctuating my vacation travelogue with tidbits about the class I've been teaching at the Loft. Here's a post about how it felt: http://tatehallaway.blogspot.com/2014/06/well-that-was-flail.html and here's one that's about the thinky-thoughts that came out of my first session: http://wyrdsmiths.blogspot.com/2014/06/changing-times-and-importance-or-not-of.html. (Also, I have had both breakfast and lunch, so I'm ready for today.)

Okay, so the trip...

I'm sure I've told this story before, but, in case I haven't, here it is:

When Shawn and I started talking about all the things surrounding marriage, we brought up the idea of a honeymoon while we were all having dinner. Mason got this bright look in his eyes, clasped his hands together, and declared, "Oh! I've always wanted to go to Paris!"

So for us, there was never any question that Mason would be coming along on our honeymoon.

Perhaps you'll say we're doing this wrong. But, the truth of it is, Shawn and I had nearly twenty years of a honeymoon before Mason came along. And, really, at this point, it's not so much about snogging like bunnies so much as it is having an excuse to spend some serious money on a family trip.

We didn't pick Paris because that's a little out of our price range. Mason's other suggestion had been a long weekend at the Waterpark of America, but that seemed not quite "celebratory" enough for us. So, we went to Bearskin Lodge, just up the Gunflint trail, for a WHOLE WEEK. As part of that, we meandered our way along the north shore of Lake Superior and stopped at all the beaches and sights that interested us.

The first time we made the trip to Bearskin in 2010, we brought along a book Shawn had picked up from the History Center called "61 Gems on Highway 61." We brought that along again because it had steered us to some very lovely and memorable sights.

First stop was the break wall in Two Harbors.

Break walls/safe harbors are kind of fascinating. On a clear day, like this one, it seems kind of useless: a big long, somewhat ugly looking structure built out into the water. But on our drive back when the wind was crashing HUGE waves against the shore we stopped at the Grand Marais break wall and the difference was... astounding. One side of the wall was getting HAMMERED by the waves; the opposite side? The sail boats in the harbor barely bounced in the calm.

Science, man. It's kind of amazing.

Okay... that's not much, but all for this time because my internet is being wonky with the pictures. I'll have more for you tomorrow, though! Now I'm off to teach my second day of "More than the Zombie Apocalypse." Wish me luck!

There was a lot going on yesterday for Free Comic Book Day, but I managed not to do very much of it. I did, at least, stop at Uncle Sven's Comic Book Shop on St. Clair for my official FCBD swag bag.

free comicbook day 007

A lot of it, as you can see, is kind of trash. Strawberry Shortcake? Pippi? But, there were "kids" bags and "adult" bags, and the adults got the Hellboy RPG guide and The Tick and some of the other more interesting titles. I was kind of surpised at the distinct lack of Ironman swag, given that FCBD coincided with his movie release. Maybe if I had actually braved one of the bigger comic book stores like The Source, where my friend comic book artist Christopher Jones was signing.

We also missed out on a cool event the owners of one of those "Free Libraries" was doing. http://libraryofjustice.blogspot.com/2013/04/youre-invited-to-free-comic-book-day.html. I blame the weather. The beginning part of the day was dreary and rainy and cold. Shawn and I were supposed to check out a neighborhood plant sale too, but she ended up with a barametric pressure induced migraine. Mason had a playdate with his friend Molly, and so we managed to get some shopping done, but then Shawn had to crash. I stopped at Sven's on the way back with Mason. When we were ready to go to the Library of Justice event, the sun had come out and he was outside playing with his friends on the block.

Mostly I did this:
me and ms ball

Which is to say nap on the couch with the kitty.

Anyway, as a bonus, in top FCBD picture you can see the new unfinished folding table that's going out on our front porch. We don't have an amazing front porch like some of the houses here in St. Paul, but it's nice enough that we like to try to sit out on it when the weather is nice. We've tried, for the most part, to keep it clutter free (though with somewhat limited success.) The addition of the table will help us get it reorganized for this summer. Shawn wants me to paint it eggplant purple. Should be fun.

I'd planned to post the last couple photos from Detour tomorrow, but I think I'll put them up today with the thought that tomorrow, I will attempt to deconstruct my con experience. Probably the funniest thing that happened today was when I was blearily standing in line for coffee in full Renji/shinigami regalia, I got a: "Finally, a Renji cosplayer!" and a high-five.

Here's me an a Ichigo (in bankai, obviously):
last of con 005

last of con 006

A very perfect little Toshiro (with a grumpy expression even, whom I ran after yelling, "Taicho! Taicho!")"
last of con 001

I also had a person stop and ask for a picture of ME, which FLOORED me. I think the lesson here is, the costume makes the man (not the tattoos.) My only other final thought is that I think I may start recommending to my fellow fic writers that they consider cosplaying in their universe at least one time. I learned a lot about walking in tabi and sandals as well as the excitement that is stairs and hakama (and mine were fake!) and ZOMG WTF escelators and hakama....

Interestingly, as I was telling [livejournal.com profile] empty_mirrors on email, I'd seen a guy at the Obon festival who was demonstrating an Aikido sword form who did this THING with his hakama, where he'd take a fist full of the material near his thigh and jerk it aside before going into seiza or shifting into stance, and I thought, that's odd. Is that part of the form? Now I think it must be. I found I natrually did a very similar thing when faced with shifting in hakama. This gave me a wierd sort of insight into daily life/walking around. Also, wearing my hair up with the headband/bandana, which is very much a Renji THING was interesting, physically, too. When I was feeling kind of wiped (not hungover because I very, very rarely drink at cons), it felt really comforting. Like a brain hug. I wonder if that (and concealing the balding/tattoos) is another reason why the character might consider wearing it, you know?

Interesting stuff all around. Will talk about panels and people interactions tomorrow.

Now... a nap.

I'm an early morning voter, so I'm already done. No need to remind me. No more calls, okay? I want it noted for the record that I have NEVER missed an election, even when the only seats up were Soil and Water and a couple of judges.

As I told my mother in an e-mail this morning, I'm planning to stay optimistic until proven otherwise. The only thing I know for absolute certainity about this mid-term election is that the Republicans own the message and the media. So, if the news tells me it's going to be a Republican blow-out, all I know is that that's what the Republicans would like me to believe.

I promised to post a few pictures, so here they are:

This is Mason in his karate (kuk sool wan) outfit, kicking Medusa's butt in the section of the Dragon Quest called Medusa's Garden (really, a game of red light/green light.)

Here is his Halloween costume. Sorry about the blurriness. Our camera has been goofy. I think I accidentally messed with one of the settings and now it has trouble auto-focusing. (It may be time to break out the manual and let Shawn fool with it until everything is right in the universe again.)

And here is my cat, Ms. All Ball, being beautiful, because the internet needs MORE cat pictures:
