It's cold. We woke up this morning to -11. Our weather man who is fond of phrases like "Alberta clipper" actually called it a "Yukon breeze." I guess we're moving up closer to the arctic circle in our meterological metaphors.

I was supposed to work out this morning, but instead I hung out with my friend and fellow writer [livejournal.com profile] naomikritzer and had coffee and talked about gifted kids and schools. It was nice since neither of us had our kids with us. I'm not sure I can remember the last time I had quality one-on-one time with another adult. Pretty cool. Plus, Naomi is an awesome person generally. If you're local to the Twin Cities area, you should consider coming to MarsCON this year as Naomi is the literary guest of honor. (Feb 29 - March 2, 2008)

In fish news, I cleaned both of the "big" tanks today. It is always shocking to me how quickly those dang carp mess up their tank. The water was gross and I changed the water only Monday. Also, we discovered this morning that there are TWO shrimp still alive in the ten gallon tank (Bob[2] and Kenya). What can I say? I'm fond of arthropods.

Shawn is off to Indiana on Saturday. She'll stay there for her dad's surgery and hang out until Wednesday and come back with her brother and his wife. That leaves Mason and I on our own for his first swimming lesson on Saturday morning and my first Loft class on Tuesday night. Luckily, I remembered the Loft class in time to make sure Shawn's OTHER brother was willing and able to babysit while I'm off teaching. (Looks like you're off the hook, Sean!) I'm not looking forward to her being gone. Sometimes I enjoy alone time. I tend to get a lot of writing done, but, regardless, I always wander around talking to myself when she's not there. This time I just have a feeling I'm going to be worried about her and feeling harried having full responsiblity for Mason. I see a LOT of the Muppet Show and the BBC's Blue Planet: Open Ocean in Mason's future. It's going to be strange to not have to take Shawn to work in the morning before his school, too. We have our routines....and they're all going to be discombubulated.

sigh.

Ah well, I think it's really good that she's going. She needs to see how her dad is doing first hand as well as get the skinny directly from the doctors about his prognosis.
