lydamorehouse: (nic & coffee)

Yeah, I know it's not necessarily unseasonable weather, but, frankly, I'm tired of it.

I'd been hoping that the snuggly weather would make me feel in a writerly mood, but, instead, I've been kind of zoned out or distractible all day. This kind of weather always makes me want to cook and eat All The Things. So, I distracted myself with some cooking. I made a big batch of borscht again this morning and had two huge bowls for breakfast/brunch. I pity my co-workers at Maplewood tonight. (Beets make me FART.)

I didn't really want to say 'yes' to work tonight, but, somehow, I managed to miss the call last month for regular hours for THIS month.  It's kind of on-call for me for April, or nothing at all. Of course, tonight is kind of the worst possible night to have to drive all the way to Maplewood (and back after 9 pm!) They're expecting as much as 8 inches?

Did I mention how done I am with this weather?

We keep getting random texts throughout the day from Mason.  Today's best one was, "Have seen three street preachers in two days so far.  If you listen closely you can hear hundreds of people's un-given f*cks."

That's my boy, the comedian.

He also reported today that they were on the Staten Island ferry, so presumably they made it to see the Statue of Liberty and all that.  Ms. Auyeung's itinerary for them was fairly ambitious. They had to bail on a bunch of things yesterday, though I notice things aren't so tightly packed today.  Today it was supposed to be: Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange, Battery Park and ferry to Staten Island (for AM), in the afternoon: Manhattan Chinatown for lunch, Museum of Chinese in America, some shopping time after, and then...?  She has nothing for the evening, but they're staying in the Chinatown in Queens (which apparently at one time was known as "Little Taipei" for all the Taiwanese that settled there) so I suspect they'll explore their own neighborhood, as it were, in the evening.

I'm really sad that I'll miss whatever texts come through while I'm at work tonight, but I'm so glad that he seems to be having fun.  Apparently, they only briefly lost some students in Times Square....

That's a seriously ambitious itinerary unless you're all wizards who can apparate to get around. Manhattan is small, so it feels like you should be able to get from Point A to Point B really quickly, but it always takes longer than you expected, especially with a big group.

I saw the Wall Street Bull while I was in Manhattan in February. Did you know people pose at both ends? Up front they pose with the head; in the back they pose HOLDING THE BULL'S BALLS.

I love the Brooklyn Bridge if the weather's nice enough to walk across it but that's super time-consuming and not something I'd try to include along with Wall Street and Battery Park and the Staten Island Ferry. (The one time I took that Ferry I was slow getting off and wound up stuck on Staten Island for like an hour, which was not as much fun as the ferry ride.)

Totally with you on the fucking snow. I don't care if Minnesota gets snow in April like half the time. This is a lot of snow for April and I am super sick of it.

WE'LL JUST CUT ACROSS CENTRAL PARK

Oh

Oh dear

This is smaller-scale reminiscent of the Europeans who think they can do a day trip to the Grand Canyon while they're in NYC.

(Okay, in fact, Central Park is only a half mile wide. But there are relatively few spots where there's a straight-across walking route, the whole park is kind of designed to MAKE you meander even if you're the sort of Type A personality that constitutes 99.9% of Manhattanites.)

My brother and SIL live about a mile from the southeast corner of Central Park. One time when I was visiting with Kiera, my SIL and I went to get Shakespeare in the Park tickets, which are free if you go to the park and wait for them. We walked up to the Delacorte Theater, which is south of the midpoint, and it was a shockingly long walk (especially at my SIL's energetic pace -- like many/most New Yorkers, she walks incredibly fast.)

We waited about two hours. It was a gorgeous day and a pretty awesome NYC experience, complete with friendly, chatty people on either side of us in the line and a guy who went around with fliers for his sandwich delivery service, which would bring lunch to you while you waited in line.

YOU HAVE NEVER HAD DIM SUM?

1. It's brunch.
2. Half of it is dumplings.
3. Basically you hang out at your table and they bring carts around and show you a little bamboo steamer basket full of yummy items and ask if you want them.

I would be hard-pressed to think of a meal model that would more perfectly align with things I know you like than dim sum.

I guess the problem is that the dumplings frequently have shrimp in them and given that you have a shellfish allergy, you'd want to be sure you didn't accidentally eat any of those.
