I spent a lot of today in the car. We dropped Shawn off at work, went to the coffee shop for a quick cup of joe, and then headed off for Adventure Peak. I brought along my "homework" for Wyrdsmiths, so I got some reading done while Mason amused himself on the various slides and such at the indoor park. I didn't finish it all, but I got a good start.
Then we decided, since we were out in that direction, to stop by the WORLD OF FISH! I shouldn't have spent the money, but I bought a piece of REAL driftwood for my tetra. They wanted it, I tell ya. It's going to soften their water a smidge and release tannin (sp?) which they supposedly like since it reminds them of their Amazon river home. Mason and I had a great time just looking at all the cool tank set ups they have there. We're particularly fond of all the ocean fish, since I'm not nearly skilled enough to deal with that whole salt water thing. Some day, though, I'd love to get some anemone and coral and such. It's so cool-looking.
I came home and plunked the driftwood in. The tetra seem... underwelmed, but I'm sure they'll get excited about it soon enough. I should take a picture of that tank now, as it's gone through some transformations. Most of the plants died (I have terrible lighting for plants), and I decided to try some bamboo, since I have some and the tank has no top so the bamboo can just grow right out the top. So now it has a kind of Asian look to it, I think, though still not... quite right. It's a work in progress, as they say.
Also, last night we had one of Mason's Crossroad's buddies and his mom over for homemade pizza. As we were all sitting at the table Fergus yawned at me a bunch, and I muttered, "Yeah, yeah, okay, I'll change some water." I read somewhere that fish *might* yawn when they're tired, but MOSTLY it's a behavior they do when they aren't happy about the water quality in the tank. Since I was kind of inspired after seeing all the spiffy tanks at WORLD of FISH, I changed a gallon of water in the 30 gallon tank. That stopped the yawning for now.
After WORLD of FISH, Mason and I spent some time at Toys R Us finally exchanging a defective drum kit that he got for Christmas from one of the uncles. I had promised Mason that the next time we went (this was a return trip, since the first time was unsuccessful, as they didn't have a replacement in store), that I'd let him peruse the aisles as long as he wanted. I think we were there for an hour and a half. I actually played the video game on my phone while he stared at EVERYTHING in the LEGO aisle, and then stared some more at EVERYTHING in the Thomas Train aisle. Then we got silly and started pressing ALL the "Try Me" buttons on the various noise making toys. It was fun for us two kids.
