When I asked Mason how the Autumnal Equinox cookies when over, he put on his teasing voice and sigh, "I had to answer a THOUSAND thank yous," which I thought was pretty cute. The cookies and the visit really seem to have broken the ice with the teacher. She invited me to be a chaperone for the class trip to the Dodge Nature Center coming up in October, and (with any luck... there's ONE DAY I couldn't go because we'll still be in Indiana) I happily accepted.
I also gave her a copy of the dictonary's definition for "antidisestablishmentarianism," which she got a good chuckle out of. She looked at me and said, "How does Mason know this word?" and I explained the video game and the fact that it's well-regarded as the longest word in the English language, even though
seanmmurphy and I debated last night whether there was such a thing as an antidisestablishmentarianist, and if so, the plural would be one letter longer. (Yeah, it's true, these are the kinds of things that I get excited about. I guess that makes me, what? A GEEK.)
Today is what Saint Paul school system calls and "early release" day (sounds like a prison term, doesn't it?) and so Mason and I are planning some kind of nature hike/adventure. Both Shawn and I worry a lot about how much less time Mason spends outside now-a-days. He and I would pretty regularly spend the afternoons at the beach, in the woods, at the park, or in our own backyard as the weather (and our temprament) allowed. Now, he gets a fifteen minute recess. The rest of the day, he's some how supposed to keep a "calm body." Anyway, I'm not quite sure where I'm going to take him, though I'd love to explore the wilderness preserve that's near the airport. I don't know anything about it, though, so I'd better do a little research before we head out. I'm picking him up at 1:40. (I had a panicked dream last night that I FORGOT and he got shuffled around to all sorts of weird places until I rescued him.)
Tonight is the Loft class and I'm fairly well prepared. I still need to do a little work to get the writing excercise ready, but otherwise it's been nice having all this time during the day because I find I collect things I need throughout the week. Hopefully, it will all continue to go well.
In writing news, the science fiction story is going well. I don't know if I mentioned this already or not, but one thing that's surprised me is how much my brain has apparently been WAITING for me to write an alien landscape. APPARENTLY, some dusty back corner of my brain has been storing up not only information -- but OPINIONS -- about what life out there is going to be like. I have to watch my tendency to go on at length about bilateral symmatry, etc. What was that word that described me before...?
Oh, yeah, I'm a geek.
