Bad News from Indiana
Jan. 14th, 2008 10:23 amSo, first for the bad news. On Saturday night just as we were headed out the door to attend a party to celebrate our friend Ger's PhD, Shawn got the call from Indiana that her father was in the hospital and that he has a cancerous growth in his kidney which may have spread elsewhere. Shawn is anxious to go and be with her dad because, even though the last report from Indiana is that they will be operating on the tumorous kidney (there had been concern that they wouldn't... well, bother, if things had progressed too far), there's something that feels very ominous about this time.
Right now Shawn's dad's surgery is scheduled for next Monday and the current plan is for Shawn to drive down with her brother Greg and his wife this coming Sunday, and that Mason and I may follow afterwards on Wednesday of next week. This will mean pulling Mason out of school for a few days, but, well... like I said, the feeling in the air isn't positive, and the sense is this may be one of the last trips we may make (crossing fingers that we're wrong.)
So today I need to pick up forms for approval for Mason's potential absence from school, but that shouldn't be any extra hassle as today is the day we're staying late to take the reading level test at the library. Mason, unfortunately, has a bit of a cold, so I'm going to double check to see if he's really up for it when I go to pick him up. The good thing about the test is, from my understanding, we can retake it as often as we like during the school year. As it's on-line, we can even take it at home.
Due to the news from Indiana, I got nothing done as far as writing goes over the weekend. At first, I thought we might actually be booking a flight for today, but luckily that didn't seem to be necessary. Anyway, I was hoping to jump into writing first thing this morning, but then discovered I was scheduled to blog over at SF Novelists. Given the state of my brain, I wrote a very silly comparison between the Force and what motivates me to write, called Why I'm a Darksider....
That's all from here. Will keep you posted.
