lydamorehouse: (cap)
It's turning out that I often have an actual issue of Captain America along with me as I go work out at the gym. I'm actually not very good at reading and working out. I see people doing it all the time -- they've got magazines, newspapers, and even giantic tomes of what appears to be nonfiction. So, I thought, comic books ... that's light reading. Should be perfect, right?

Not for me. I may have to break down and figure out this whole iPod thing you kids are into so I can have some books on "tape" or music to hop along with (with which to hop along?). Anyway, the problem with reading for me is that I tend to get very physically absorbed. I hunker down over the words (and in the case of comicbooks, the pictures) and kind of lose track of everything. Not good when you're supposed to be walking three miles an hour uphill (both ways!) I managed to cause the treadmill to turn itself off somehow. Apparently, I was a hazard.

I stumbled off the treadmill and made my way over to a stationary bike to finish my comic book, which I also upset (it beeped at me a lot) by mostly forgetting to pedal. Luckily, I got done with the book pretty quickly. I decided I'd better not try to read my writer's group homework which I'd also brought along or I'd never get an actual workout in. The rest of the workout went swimmingly, except that apparently my heart was beating too fast for that weird jogging machine and it kept making me pause to rest.

As for Cap... alas, poor Bucky/Winter Solider (still very hot, though!) I'm afraid very addicted to Mr. Brubaker's title... and I'm kind of distressed he seems to be writing a mini-series for Uncanny X-Men. I don't need this. Really, I don't. I mean, sure I recently got paid for the delivery of Tate's last book as well as the signing bonus for the next set, but it would be very foolish of me (not to mention potentially hazardous to my relationship) if I spent it all on comicbooks. I'm fairly satisfied just following Cap, even though I'm not sure I'm liking where Brubaker may be going with Sharon/Agent 13 and the whole spoiler ) thing. I'm with all the heroes that are worried about Tony Stark's penchant for cloning. ;-)

My god, I just "friended" Ed Brubaker on MySpace. Am I a fangrrl, or what?

Don't answer that. I think I already know.

Isn't it funny how everyone wants to be what they aren't? Curly haired women wish they had straight hair; women with straight hair... you get the idea. So, in my deeping fandom of Ed Brubaker (writer of many comic books for Marvel, but most notably for me the current Captain America title -- go Bucky Barnes!), I checked out his MySpace. First of all, whoa doggie, that man has a lot of "friends." Secondly, he's my age (okay, a year older,) and a Scorpio like me. Third, he has unfinished novels in his sock drawer.

How hillarious.

I can't remember a time when I didn't dream of writing/drawing comic books for Marvel. When Ed and I were ten, all I did was pretend to be Marvel superheroes in my grandmother's backyard with my cousin Laun. Laun and I "wrote" (played, really, as we only rarely took the time to transcribe any of our epic adventures onto paper) hundreds of continuing storylines for the X-Men, Avengers, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, etc. I secretly wanted nothing more than a job at Marvel Comics when I grew up.

And Ed Brubaker wants to write novels.

Let me tell you something, Ed. Look at the number of "friends" you have on MySpace and compare your tally to mine. I've written six commercially published novels. No one knows my name. Although, man, if you can do it, you could go the way of another comic book writer turned novelist, Neil Gaiman. With as many MySpace friends as you already have, I say finish up one of those beauties. You tell me what you have lanned for next month's Cap issue, and I'll get you in touch with my agent. You can realize your dream of becoming a novelist. I can help.
